The Summer Reading Program is one of the library's most popular programs! Kids often lose ground in reading and comprehension skills during summer break (read 7 Tips to Keep Kids Reading All Summer for more information). To avoid this, the library encourages kids to set goals (30 or 60 minutes of reading a day) and visit the library regularly for new reading material. Kids earn fun rewards for participating, from small weekly prizes to the big grand drawing at the end of the summer.
Children ages 2 and up are invited to register. Younger participants may register as "Listeners," and instead of tracking time spent reading alone, track the time they're read to by an older child or adult. "Readers" can choose their goal of either 30 or 60 minutes per day, and track their reading using a worksheet we provide. Along with the reading program we offer a variety of fun, theme-related events! We try to offer programs for a variety of ages, too. For more information about any of these events or the summer reading program, call or stop by and ask for one of our terrific Youth Services Assistants, Karen Seghers and Anne Creffield. Weekly Programs Story Time Wednesdays at 10:30am, June 15-July 27 Singing and crafts designed for kids 2-5 years old. Siblings are welcome too! Please pre-register at the circulation desk so that we have enough craft materials available. Lunch Bunch Mondays at 12pm, June 13-July 25 A program for kids ages 5-12 who would like to bring a sack lunch to the library and listen to a good book read out loud by a librarian while eating. Reading will be followed by discussion and brief activities. No registration required. This year we'll be highlighting the work of author Laurence Yep. LEGO Club Wednesdays at 3:30pm LEGO Club is open to children of all ages. This is an opportunity for boys and girls to create LEGO structures and build relationship skills, too. Use the library's bricks! Creations are put on display in the library until the next LEGO Club session. No registration required. Storyteller's Club and One World, Many Games Tuesdays at 6:30pm, June 14-July 26 For ages 9 and up. The Storyteller's Club will feature a story from a new culture every week, and foster interaction through reading aloud and other reading-related activities. One World, Many Games will feature new games every week from other cultures. Find out how kids in other countries entertain themselves! No pre-registration required. |
