Getting a Card

Manchester District Library is supported by the citizens of Bridgewater Twp., Freedom Twp., Manchester Twp., and the Village of Manchester. Residents of these townships and others who own property in the library district can get a card at the library free of charge by bringing in a current driver's license. If you don't have a driver's license, call the library at 428-8045 to ask about other acceptable forms of ID.

Minors (under age 18) must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian to sign up for a library card. The library recommends that children get their own cards when they are old enough to write their own name.

Non-residents may purchase a card at rates set yearly by the library board. Non-residents with a different home library may be able to make occasional use of Manchester District Library through a reciprocal borrowing program (see below).

Interlibrary Loan

The Library can easily (and fairly quickly) borrow books for you from other libraries on our shared automation system. Ask a staff member how you can request books yourself through our catalog on the Web.

If you can't find a title in the shared system catalog, inquire with library staff--as we can also obtain books from other libraries in the cooperative or even from libraries in other states! (However, these methods generally take longer.)

Reciprocal Borrowing

Manchester District Library participates in the Michicard and TLN Reciprocal Borrowing programs. Under these programs, you may be able to borrow books directly from participating libraries using your Manchester District Library card. For example, you can use your Manchester District Library card with a Michicard sticker at the Saline District Library or Clinton Township Public Library. Resident card holders can use their Manchester District Library card at the Chelsea or Dexter District Libraries under the TLN reciprocal program.

Each library may set its own rules for reciprocal borrowing, for example you can usually borrow books but not audiovisual materials with your Michicard privileges. You will likely need both your Manchester District Library card and your driver's license or state ID to apply for borrowing privileges at reciprocating libraries.

Manchester District Library card holders with a good borrowing record can obtain a Michicard sticker for their cards and a list of participating libraries at the circulation desk.

TLN Reciprocal borrowing is restricted to residents of the library district. You can obtain a list of TLN member Libraries at the TLN Web site. TLN libraries that participate in reciprocal borrowing are marked with an asterisk.

Loan Rules

Most items can be renewed, unless another patron has requested the item. You can renew books yourself from our Web catalog or by calling the library at 428-8045.

Patrons are asked to make reasonable efforts to return items in a timely fashion. If you do forget about an item and it is two weeks overdue, the library will send you a notice via email or regular mail. When an item is four weeks overdue, the patron is sent a bill for replacement cost of the item.

Patrons are asked to take reasonable care of materials. However, the staff also understands that things happen--if your new puppy chews up a book, it won't be the first time we've seen it and we won't ban you from the library. If there is a problem, ask the staff member on duty for advice on the best way to handle it.

Books on cassette and videos have a limited lifespan. If a tape isn't working right anymore, please let staff know when you return the item.
